This is what you've been waiting for--a chance to spend an entire weekend
talking about copyright!

Now that the amendments to the Copyright Act are fully in force, the AAO's
Professional Development Committee is pleased to announce the cycle of a two-day
workshop on Copyright, commencing in Toronto, that will tour the Chapters
thereby ensuring that  all AAO members have a chance to refresh their knowledge
on copyright.

The first workshop is set for:

November 27-28
Quality Inn Motel Midtown, Toronto, Ontario
9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

Further dates will be announced in the new year.

The workshop provides an overview of the recently amended Canadian copyright law
 and an opportunity to apply the law
while discussing six case studies.

The first day is devoted to an intensive overview of how the Canadian copyright
law works. Topic covered include:
                    categories of works, ownership of copyright, term of
copyright, economic and moral rights of                      copyright owners,
exceptions, penalties for infringement, international copyright, and how to
                    analyze a copyright problem.

The second day allows participants to apply what they have learned as they
discuss six case studies on the topics of:
                    Photos, Unlocatable copyright owners, Term of copyright in
unpublished works, Copyright
                    in foreign records, Donor agreements, and Creating a
website.  Each case also raises a
                    number of other copyright questions that come up every day
in reading rooms across the
                    country.  The second day will conclude with a discussion of
what your institution has to do to                      comply with the changes
to the Act.

The presenters:

Wanda Noel is a lawyer, specializing in intellectual property, and in the area
of copyright in particular.  Her clients include institutions, government and
private sector companies.  In the archival sector she has worked extensively
with the National Archives of Canada, the Association of Canadian Archivists,
L'association des archivists du Quebec and the Canadian Council of Archives for
almost 20 years in developing, revising and  implementing legislation, policies
and agreements in archival institutions across Canada.  She has spoken at
conventions, conducted seminars for major universities, public and private
libraries, archival institutions and private organizations. She is an active
member of the Canadian Bar Association and the Patent and Trademark Institute of
Canada, participating in, and chairing, various committees addressing copyright
law revision, security interests in intellectual property and legal issues
arising from the information highway.

Jean Dryden is an information resources consultant with over twenty-five years
experience in archives and records management in the government, educational and
not-for-profit sectors.  Her expertise in copyright, particularly in unpublished
archival material, has been developed over many years.  She served as the Chair
of the Bureau of Canadian Archivists Copyright Committee from 1993 to 1999, and
played a lead role in successful lobbying for exceptions for libraries, archives
and museums.  She has been actively involved in developing training materials
and delivering workshops
to acquaint the archival community with the recent changes to the law, and is
currently developing training materials for other constituencies.  Now that the
Act is fully  in force, she has been assisting institutions in implementing the
necessary changes to their policies, procedures, and forms.
