Archives Assistant (2 contract positions)
JOB POSTING # DBW0201

DURATION:       May 2002 for 12 weeks (58 days)
HOURS:          7 hours per day
SALARY:         $15.62 per hour (includes vacation pay)

Under the terms of the Young Canada Works in Heritage Institutions
Program, the University of Western Ontario Archives (incorporating the
J. J. Talman Regional Collection), is seeking qualified applicants for
two 12 week contract Archives Assistant positions.  The successful
applicants will enter data into existing archival reference databases to
enhance access to high demand fonds, convert non-standard finding aids
to Rules for Archival Description (RAD), apply physical arrangement to
fonds for which draft RAD descriptions have been completed, carry out
basic conservation, and assist with general reference services.

Qualifications and Skills:
•       Must be currently enrolled in, or have completed, a university degree
program in archival studies or  in a related field (eg, history or
library and information science), preferably with courses in    archival
studies.
•       Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.
•       Must have experience in the use of Windows 98, WordPerfect and
database applications, preferably File  Maker Pro.
•       Must have excellent organizational skills and be able to work without
constant supervision.
•       Preference will be given to applicants with practical experience
arranging and describing archival       materials using the Rules for
Archival Description (RAD).
•       Preference will be given to applicants with practical experience
carrying out preventive conservation    activities and providing basic
archival reference services.

Functions and Duties:
•       Arrange archival materials in accordance with accepted archival
principles and practices.
•       Describe archival materials in accordance with the Rules for Archival
Description (RAD).
•       Conduct data entry and prepare manual and automated finding aids.
•       Carry out basic preventive conservation, including encapsulation.
•       Provide basic reference services to faculty, students, academic
researchers and members of the general  public.

Note: These positions are funded in part by a grant from the Young
Canada Works in Heritage Institutions Program, a component of the Youth
Employment Strategy of the Department of Canadian Heritage, Government
of Canada.  As hiring is governed by the terms of this program,
prospective applicants should be aware of the following:

•       the final decision to fill these positions is conditional on the
approval of funding by the Department   of Canadian Heritage, and

•       applicants must be between the ages of 16 and 30 at the start of the
employment period.
