Hi Madeleine,

I'm replying-all in case this is of use to others.

This isn't a resource per se, but rather a technique I used to help a donor who was dragging their feet on completing a donation agreement. The donation included original creative work by the donor and discussing the copyright clause in the agreement meant the donor had to contemplate their own death - something that brought up a strong emotional response which basically shut down their ability to think about it.

Initially it was not clear that this was the core of the issue, but when the donor was eventually able to identify it as such, I said this was entirely understandable and suggested that instead of using their own name, we could talk about "Bob" - whether Bob would like to transfer copyright to Bob's children or to the archives, after Bob's eventual death. The donor was game to try, so in the rest of our discussions we only talked about Bob's donation, and Bob's wishes. It worked exceptionally well, providing just enough mental and emotional distance for the donor to feel they could discuss the question. The details/agreement were wrapped up within about a week, after more than a year of previous dead-end conversations.

If people find themselves in a similar situation, I recommend giving it a try. Another handy item for our respective toolkits...

Best wishes,
   Sarah Glassford

Subject: Emotional Support Resources for Archives

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to reach out with an inquiry about emotional support resources used in different archival institutions. I want to develop a list of resources to support for example, researchers that may react to materials or have difficulties in the donation process. There was a survey going around evaluating this and I wanted to know what institutions can provide both internally and externally. I would love to know anyone's experience and thoughts on this and any resources you may have at your institution.

Thanks so much!
