Dear Colleagues (please give the following some thought):

Some of you may have heard about this event. On April 17th the City of Toronto Archives and the Toronto Area Archivists Group is hosting an Archives in Your Attic Day at 255 Spadina Rd. from 10 am to 4 pm. This is an event where the public is welcome to bring in their own archival documents (ie. photographs, family papers, maps etc.) and receive advice from archivists and conservators with respect to the identification, care, handling and proper storage of the items. Yes, similar to the Antiques Roadshow, but with archival documents rather than artifacts, and no monetary appraisal. We've had a good response so far from archivists and conservators willing to volunteer and help out, however, based on the success of similar events held previously in other parts of the province, we expect we will need a few more volunteers. Only a half day is required of you - either the morning shift 9:30-1:00 , or the afternoon shift 12:30-4:00. Of course if you wish to help out for the full day, that would be wonderful. If you are interested or would like further information, please phone me at (416) 441-1111 ext. 266, or email me at the address below, by Friday, March 12th.

One more note, we are holding an information and training session for all the volunteers on Tuesday March 23, 1999 at the City of Toronto Archives (255 Spadina Rd.). This will begin at 5:30 and run until perhaps 7:00, and will involve a briefing for all the volunteers on what the day will include, how things are going to operate, who will be doing what etc., as well as a brief talk by Mary Ledwell, from the Archives of Ontario, on identifying the various types of photographs (photographs are expected to be the predominant form of records brought by the public).

Thanks in advance to all the volunteers. As I mentioned before, please give this consideration. It is a great opportunity to raise the public awareness of archives.

Sincerely,

Bob Anger (TAAG Vice-President)
