Dear colleagues,

I hope this message finds you well.

I am writing regarding the next session of my research seminar, “Description, Evaluation and Prescription in Economics and Philosophy” at the Collège International de Philosophie (Université Paris Lumières), organized with the support of the Walras-Pareto Center (Université de Lausanne) and the Université Paris Cité.

The next seminar session will take place on Friday, April 07. Julie A. Nelson, Professor of Economics (Emeritus) at the University of Massachusetts Boston and Senior Research Fellow at the Global Development and Environment Institute (Tufts University), will give a talk entitled “Economics by Humans and for Humans”.

Here is the Abstract of her talk: “A dominant belief, especially held by proponents of the Neoclassical orthodoxy, is that economics is an objective science and hence “uncontaminated” by the influences of human social relations and subjective values. In this talk, I will first review the very human—and gendered, and value-laden—sources of this myth in the history of economic thought. A better alternative will then be proposed, and two illustrations given. The first, coming from an empirical study of risk behavior, demonstrates how methodological factors that were banished by the orthodoxy are in fact crucial for creating reliable knowledge. The second examines how the myth has caused great real-world harm to humans and other beings. A fuller understanding of how the discipline has been created by humans, I argue, can spur us to do economics in a way that is both more reliable and better serves humanity.”

Julie’s research deals with various topics in feminist economics, ecological economics, the philosophy and methodology of economics, ethics and economics, the teaching of economics, and the empirical study of individual and household behavior. She has received numerous awards for her outstanding contributions, including the Chancellor’s Award for Distinguished Scholarship (University of Massachusetts Boston, 2018) and the Thomas F. Divine S.J. Award for lifetime contributions (Association for Social Economics, 2014).

Among her publications, I should mention, at the very least, Feminism, Objectivity and Economics <https://www.routledge.com/Feminism-Objectivity-and-Economics/Nelson/p/book/9780415133371> (Routledge, 1996), Economics for Humans <https://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/E/bo28638720.html> (The Chicago University Press, 2006, new edition 2018), the volume she coedited with Marianne A. Ferber, Beyond Economic Man: Feminist Theory and Economics <https://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/B/bo3684294.html> (The Chicago University Press, 1993, new edition 2003), and her paper Feminism and Economics <https://www.aeaweb.org/articles?id=10.1257/jep.9.2.131>.

Julie's talk, open to all without registration, will take place from 6 pm to 8 pm (Paris time) over Zoom. You can attend the seminar using this link: https://unil.zoom.us/j/95709013453

I remain at your disposal for any further inquiries you may have.

My very best wishes,

Sina Badiei
