biennial ALAHPE Conference.
You are all welcome to attend the first part of the event, a lecture by
Professor Montecinos entitled "The Gender of Economists and Economics in
Latin America" (9:00 am to 12:00am). The lecture will be follow by a

The goal of the workshop is to discuss the methods, sources, and
epistemological challenges involved in the study of gender in economics and
assessing the role of women economists in the history of Latin American
economics. Our invited senior scholar this year is Dr. Verónica Montecinos

Distinguished Professor of Sociology at The Pennsylvania State University,
Greater Allegheny.
The workshop will be divided in two parts.
PART 1 (9:00 am – 12:00)
Introductory remarks | 9:00 am – 9:15 am
Lecture "The Gender of Economists and Economics in Latin America" (open to
the public with previous inscription) | 9:15 am – 10:15 am
Professor Montecinos will analyze how gender influences various dimensions
of the economics profession, including hiearchies of authority and
prestige, networks and political involvement, academic credentials,
appointments, promotions, publications, and professional identity. In her
presentation Professor Montecinos will refer to the sociology of
professions and the sociology of gender and will present the results of a
set of recent interviews with a group of economists whose work is related
to the topic of the workshop. She will share with the audience her
experience doing research on Latin American economists, discuss the
importance of cultivating interdiciplinarity and methodological pluralism
to advance our understanding of the way economists approach their work, how
they see themselves, and how others have come to perceive them.
