Thanks, Terry--I will actually own up to my ignorance and give you the
credit!

As you point out, the quotation is quite ironic. When Sam Clemens was a boy
of 14, his father was already dead.

But assuredly the idea is as true as ever. Oddly enough, the very same
amazing accrual of wisdom happened to my own father, and during those very
years...
