You can find much about "the silent lie" in an essay entitled, "My
First Lie, and How I Got Out of It," in Charles Neider's The  Comic
Mark Twain Reader, Doubleday, Garden City, NY,  1977, pp. 473-480.

The same essay also appears in other collections of Twain's works.
