What a nice surprise to see the Autobiography at my local Costco--for
$19.99! I had not bought it yet, thinking that somebody would give it to me
for Christmas, which did not happen. Ditto for my birthday. I had checked it
out from our school library, and knew I would buy it eventually, but the
Costco price meant that I put it in my cart, along with all the huge
warehouse items. That big book fit right in with the four-carton of orange
juice and monster bag of tortilla strips.
A former student loaned me the Autobiography on CD, and I have been
listening to it as I drive my 70 miles every day to and from school. I
think listening to it may be the best way to go--he dictated so much of it,
so why not hear it read aloud? I have received a number of emails about the
book from frustrated friends and frustrated former students, complaining
that the book was so strange and that they were having trouble reading it.
I recommended to them that they read it the same way he "wrote" it: read
what interests you, skip what doesn't, and don't worry about it. Of course,
I can't skip a word...
