Brian,

The September 1993 issue of English Journal contains an article entitled
"Racism and _Huckleberry Finn_: Censorship, Dialogue, and Change" by Allen
Carey-Webb. Not only is it a a sensitive and accessible treatment of the
issue, but it also contains an excellent bibliography which will point you
in
other directions that should be productive. A more extensive treatment of
various viewpoints on the issue can be found in _Satire or Evasion: Black
Perspectives on Huckleberry Finn_ (1992), edited by James Leonard, Thomas
Tenney, and Thadious M. Davis.
