I believe his name is in the city directory Orion Clemens prepared for
Keokuk, Iowa before he went west as one earlier example.

Subject: Sam's Name in Print?

Does anyone other than myself think that the name "Samuel Clemens" first
appeared in print in the 1862 Territory of Nevada Directory?

Of course, my thinking, and anyone's else knowledge, is no contest. Mine
is but a guess...

Thanks,
Sara
