Dear John,
        The passage you are refering to does occur several times in
*Pudd'nhead Wilson*, first when Roxy decides to switch the babies, and
later when Tom finds out the truth of his birth and indeed sells Roxy
"down the river."  It is a major factor in her decision early in the
novel.  Hope this helps.
