There is a cover of the magazine "Der Floh" with Twain as Diogenes around
that time (actually several years earlier).

I cannot hunt it down at the moment but I have a slide of it I am looking at
right now.  I believe I got it from either OUR FAMOUS GUEST by Dolmetsch ;
or from Lou Budd's book, OUR MARK TWAIN.
