This past semester I compiled an annotated bibliography on censorship of
literature dealing with racial themes between blacks and whites.  I have
a section on Mark Twain's _Tom Sawyer_ and _Huck Finn_, with annotations
of many articles dealing with the issue of racism.  There are a couple of
newspaper articles in there that deal with Twain's sponsorship of a black
law student, and touch on his view about bigotry.  These were in the New
York Times, though I don't remember which issue.  If you are interested
