I am a humble (and brand new) grad student at the University of Oklahoma, and we were discussing this very topic in my Transpacific American Lit class. It seems that in analyzing Postmodern minority literature, scholars are starting to look to Twain. I know this is probably of no real help, but it may give you some different avenues to try to research.

Subject: Re: Twain on China and Chinese Immigrants

Hi Randy,

I have some stuff on MT and the Chinese in my book, and I know Steve
Courtney will have plenty of new material on Twichell's evolving views and
social contributions in his biography of JT coming out soon. I did not know
of Martin Zehr's work in this area -- is there a book in the near future on
this topic, Martin?
