In addition to the titles Mar. Wherry suggests about Howells and
Haymarket, you might want to consider Gore Vidal's book, about 5
years ago (as I recall) with a strange title, something like United
States [ok, I just looked it up and that is the title and the date is
1993].  There's a chapter on Howells, featuring his Haymarket
connection.  This ch. is a reprint of Vidal's essay in NYRev of Bks,
