What surprises me, as an avid reader of literary biography and
particularly avid reader of Twain, is that there isn't a "definitive"
biography in the vein of Edel's Henry James. Certainly very few American
authors have left lives as well-documented as Twain's or a shelf of
their works as large and distinguished.Surely there must be someone out
there who is prepared to devote the next 20-30 years of his/her life to
a monumental task like this.
