This is in reference to Mr. MacDonnell's query about clothes formerly owned by Samuel L. Clemens. The Mark Twain Birthplace State Historic Site has two of his dress shirts. One has his initials embroidered in red thread inside the collar and the name of the maker is shown on a sewn in tag as "Newell, Maker, Fifth Ave., N.Y.". The other shirt has Sam's initials in red thread embroidered on the front of the shirt under the area which was starched and buttoned. The initials are one on top of another in a fancy design. Under a little flap next to the initials is the name of the maker, on a sewn in tag, "A. Dalmasso, Florence, Tornabuoni 11." I don't know if this will be any help in determining where his white suits were made.
