This question was referred to me from the Library of Congress:

Twain said "I refused to attend his funeral but sent a very nice letter
saying I approved of it."  To whom was he referring?

In Alex Ayres's _Wit and Wisdom of Mark Twain_, Ayres states this quote
is in regard to a Tammany leader and the remark was made to a newspaper
reporter (p. 180). Can this quote be further verified with a more
specific citation?
