"Slave" has been the substitution of choice in classes for a long time.

There is a problem with assuming that the words are synonms, of course, The
linking of Africans and slavery is a stereotype that is already too deeply
ingrained.

A few years ago I had students illustrate different chapters in Connecticut
Yankee. The English slaves emerged as Africans.
