From the 19 October 2001 "Open Season" column written by Tom FitzGerald in
the San Francisco Chronicle:

BOGUS CLAIM: During Game 1 of the ALCS, Fox broadcasters quoted from the
Yankees' media guide when they announced that Paul O'Neill is a "direct
descendant of Mark Twain." Says Dennis Kelly of S.F.: "Mark Twain had four
children. His son died before he was 3. Two daughters died unmarried and
childless. Only the second daughter, Clara, married. She told Twain on his
death bed in 1910 that she was pregnant. That child, Nina, died alone and
childless in Los Angeles. She was Mark Twain's last direct descendant. The
Yankees have been informed of their error but apparently continue with it."
Gosh, we're just surprised Fox people know who Mark Twain was.
