could also be THE JIM DILEMMA  by Jocelyn Chadwick-Joshua;  Terrell's
book is more about the history of slavery in Missouri; Jocelyn's book
is more about Twain's African American friends, servants, and
acquaintances.  These are 2 excellent books, and they go together
quite well.
