Dear Dennis,

Ivan Benson in Mark Twain's Western Years identifies Maguire's Opera House
as
the San Francisco location of Twain's first lecture. He also celebrates
Piper's Opera House in Virginia City as the "most noteworthy theater" in
that
city. He cites Jenny Lind, Artemus Ward, and Adah Isaccs Mencken as
performers at Pipers'.
