When I was an undergraduate, I had a professor who substituted the word
"slave" when he read passages of HF aloud in class.  Not the perfect
solution (it might make some passages confusing--like Pap's rant about a
free man of color voting), but worthy of consideration, especially for a
7-year old listener.
