Abstract
Technoschism. That is where we're at now in the history of libraries and
archives. We've moved beyond a simple paradigm shift in the world of
information use and into a whole new territory altogether. Google is the
shark in the tank and meets the needs of its customers-advertisers. With
Google undertaking the largest digitization project in history, with the
University of Toronto allying with Yahoo!, MSN and the Open Content
Alliance, with users changing their information seeking behaviours, and many
more changes in the information environment, what does this mean for LAC and
libraries and archives in Canada? Join Stephen for an exploration of the
challenges and the opportunities.
About the speaker
Stephen Abram, MLS, is immediate past-President of the Canadian Library
Association and Vice President Innovation for SirsiDynix. He has been VP of
Corporate Development for Micromedia ProQuest and Publisher Electronic
Information for Thomson. He ran libraries for Suncor, Coopers & Lybrand,
Smith Lyons Torrance Stevenson and Mayer and Hay Group. Stephen has been
listed by Library Journal as one of their first "Mover and Shakers", the
'key' people influencing the future of libraries and librarianship. He has
been awarded SLA's John Cotton Dana Award as well as being a Fellow of the
SLA. He was Canadian Special Librarian of the Year and Alumni of the Year
for the Faculty of Information Studies at the University of Toronto. He is
an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Information
Studies. He was President 2002 of the Ontario Library Association as well as
sitting on the SLA Board of Directors as Director and Secretary. He gives
over 100 international keynote talks annually to library and information
industry conferences and writes articles and columns for Library Management,
Information Outlook, Feliciter, Access, Multimedia & Internet @ Schools, and
Library Journal.

Résumé
Un technoschisme. Voilà où nous en sommes aujourd'hui dans l'histoire des
bibliothèques et des archives. Il ne s'agit plus d'un simple changement de
paradigme dans le domaine de l'utilisation de l'information, mais bien d'une
transition vers un univers totalement nouveau. Google est le « requin » qui
répond aux besoins de ses clients - les publicitaires. Cependant, avec le
lancement par Google du plus vaste projet de numérisation de l'histoire,
l'alliance entre l'Université de Toronto et Yahoo!, MSN et l'Open Content
Alliance, l'évolution des comportements des utilisateurs en matière de
recherche d'information et les nombreux autres bouleversements qui touchent
le milieu de l'information, nous sommes en droit de nous demander quelles
incidences auront tous ces changements sur BAC et sur les bibliothèques et
archives du Canada. Venez rencontrer Stephen pour en apprendre davantage sur
les défis et les possibilités qui nous attendent.
Le conférencier
Président sortant de la Canadian Library Association, Stephen Abram, MBSI,
occupe actuellement le poste de vice-président, Innovation, chez SirsiDynix.
Il exerça auparavant les fonctions de vice-président, Expansion des
entreprises, chez Micromedia ProQuest et d'éditeur de l'information
électronique chez Thomson. Il a aussi dirigé des bibliothèques pour Suncor,
Coopers & Lybrand, Smith Lyons Torrance Stevenson et le Mayer and Hay Group.
Le Library Journal l'a cité parmi les personnes les plus influentes, celles
qui ont le plus façonné l'avenir des bibliothèques et des services
bibliothécaires. Récipiendaire du prix John Cotton Dana décerné par la SLA,
Stephen Abram est aussi membre fellow de la SLA. Il a été nommé
bibliothécaire spécialisé de l'année au Canada (Canadian Special Librarian
of the Year) et ancien étudiant de l'année de la Faculté des études sur
l'information de l'Université de Toronto, faculté où il occupe actuellement
un poste de professeur auxiliaire. Il fut président de l'Association des
bibliothèques de l'Ontario en 2002 et siégea au conseil d'administration de
la SLA en qualité d'administrateur et de secrétaire. Il donne plus de cent
discours-programmes chaque année dans le cadre de conférences
internationales du monde des bibliothèques et de l'information, et écrit des
articles et des chroniques pour les revues Library Management, Information
Outlook, Feliciter, Access, Multimedia & Internet @ Schools et Library
Journal.
La séance se déroulera en anglais. Un service d'interprétation simultanée
sera disponible.
