Just to clarify options at GMU. You can take two course in History of Economic Thought at PhD level and of course write a PhD thesis in that field.  But you can also now specialize in Smith studies with 2 course in Adam Smith.  You can also study political economy, and field in constitutional political economy which delves deeply into the work of not only Buchanan but also Rawls, Nozick, Hayek, Ostrom, etc.  And of course you can study multiple courses in Austrian economics, institutional economics, etc.
