When this essay was included as Vol. 22 in the Uniform Editions of Mark
Twain's works and published in 1900, American Publishing Co. hired Forrest
Morgan to proofread the earlier volumes before they were reprinted and new
plates made.  No extensive examination has been made of the changes Morgan
implemented for this volume (Vol. 22 in the set).  Morgan's 22-volume set
of the Royal Edition with his annotations is in the Beinecke Rare Book and
Manuscript Library at Yale University, a gift from William Lyon Phelps in
1922.  An exact answer may be found to your question by examining Morgan's
